Our Engagement Story
May 8, 2004
I woke up around 9:45 that Saturday morning in my apartment in Tuscaloosa after a long week of exams. I hadn't heard from Jacob yet, so I called his hotel room but there was no answer. I figured he was in the shower, so I took one of my own and then called him again. This time I got an answer and when I asked what he was doing he said he was playing a game. He then proceeded to ask me if I wanted to join him and play the "Find Jacob Game". I assumed he was joking, as he often is, but when he followed with the rules to play, I knew that something was up.
Jacob proceeded to tell me to go to my front door, and follow the directions. After he hung up I went to my door and found a note taped to the front containing directions for a carefully planned scavenger hunt.
Each clue lead me to various places around the city that meant something special to us in our relationship. The first place was Crimson Cafe. The lady at the register had my next clue which led me to the site of our first kiss. Next was the Hampton Inn where Jacob stayed while in town on his weekends in Tuscaloosa. Next was IHOP where we used to have breakfast. KMart was where we bought a camera to take pictures our first weekend together. Everyone was so great in adding to my experience when I asked them if anything had been left for me. My next clue led me to a dock on the Black Warrior River where a note was taped to a sign. Then I was led to the North River Yacht Club where I found a note under the foot of an elephant sculpture, that in turn led me to the actual Club where we hung out the first weekend Jacob came to see me. My last clue was in the women's rest room, after reading the sweet note he wrote, I came out to see him down on one knee!
All of the notes and clues were so beautifully written and planned out, all he had to do when I came out was ask "Will you marry me?" and of course I immediately said yes (after I uncovered my dropped jaw). No one was around the yacht club at this time on Saturday morning so we stayed a bit and enjoyed the view of the water.
I was so excited when we drove to Birmingham after lunch. I had relatives in town for my graduation who were able to share in this special time with me. The whole day was more than I ever could have asked for.
